A personal note from the Boobie-Thon founder about the history of this event...
Published October 1, 2005

Honestly, this all started somewhat as a joke back in 2002. A good friend of mine, and somewhat 'popular' blogger, was about to spend her first Thanksgiving holiday completely alone after her divorce. That same weekend also happened to be my 30th birthday. A few months before she had flown down for my husband's 30th birthday bash, but couldn't afford two visits to Florida so close together. I couldn't stand the thought of us having a big party with friends, and her sitting at home alone during the holiday.

Not one who is easily deterred, I used my former blog to put out the word — a fellow blogger was in "need". I asked people to PayPal me money so we could purchase a plane ticket, and help her avoid a lonely holiday weekend. In exchange, we offered "rack shots" and a live cam-feed from our hot tub party to compensate everyone for their generousity.

Again, this was all basically tongue-in-cheek. It was the time of "saving Karyn" and blog-surfing by "rack browser". So a few girlfriends banded together and "Boobies to Florida" was born...

Much to our surprise, however, there's power in them-thar interwebs! The word quickly spread and donations began pouring in. What started out as a "friends-thing" ($145 of the $349 plane ticket was immediately funded by one friend alone), soon added up to hundreds of dollars in just the first couple of days, some of it from people we didn't even know.

It was then we realized that we had the power to really turn this into something real. Not a joke. But a way to save lives. The plane ticket was purchased as cheaply as possible and we kept the drive going to raise as much money as we possibly could for breast cancer. After all if we were going to use photos of boobies to raise money — we might as well try to save them along the way!

We took a lot of flak that first year. We were called a lot of names. But again, I am not one who is easily deterred. We came back bigger and better in 2003. And again in 2004. And now here we are, back again during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2005. And to date we've raised over $17,000 for blogger charities and breast cancer.

Normally the first $359 raised — the price of the original plane ticket — is earmarked for a "bloggers helping bloggers" charity. The remaining funds go directly to Susan G. Komen. However, with the sheer magnitude of the Hurricane Katrina and Rita disasters this year, donors will have the option of donating an unlimited amount to the American Red Cross as well. It is up to each individual to choose which charity (Komen or Red Cross) they wish to donate to — and what dollar amount they wish to donate to one, the other, or both.

A huge thanks to those who have supported us through the years — be it with their volunteer-time, link-support, word of mouth, photo submissions, monetary donations and / or words of encouragement. All are equally appreciated and we couldn't do it without you!

We look forward to our best year ever this year!
and the 2005 Boobie-Thon staff

P.S. For those tempted to critcize the means in which we raise donations (because we hear the same complaints every year)...we'd ask that you please take a look at the "Expose the Truth" 2004 and 2005 public service announcements from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Their print photos below are very similar to the ones you will find here. Basically a celebration of boobies in order to save them...they're a common bond we all share in one form or another. We mean no harm to those who have had their lives and bodies permanently altered by the horrors of breast cancer — and in fact, we encourage survivors to submit their photos in order to remind everyone just why we're here in the first place!
